A

ACACIA FARNESIANA GUM
Gum Arabic, the sticky juice of a species of acacia. Used to build a film in e.g. mascara to improve the adhesion of the color particles to the eyelashes.

ACACIA DEALBATA LEAF WAX
Mimosa blossom wax. A firm substance with a fine blossom fragrance. Used for its fragrant properties.

ACER SACCHARINUM (SUGAR MAPLE) EXTRACT
Sweet maple syrup (organic) is a good substance for firming the hair. The sugar penetrates into the hair shaft, binds moisture and firms the hair from within.

ACETYL TETRAPEPTIDE-2
A small protein molecule which stimulates the metabolism of the epidermis.

ACHILLEA MILLEFOLIUM EXTRACT
Yarrow extract (organic) stimulates the circulation and has firming, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Yarrow extract contains valuable chamazulene.

ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL, ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER
A polyacrylic acid which combines both water soluble and water resistant properties in a single molecule. A small quantity is sufficient to stabilize emulsions, and to thicken at the same time (gelling agent).

AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM (HORSE CHESTNUT) EXTRACT
Extract of Horse Chestnut improves both the absorption of active ingredients and also skin circulation.

ALANINE

ALCHEMILLA VULGARIS EXTRACT
Lady's mantle (organic) has astringent, tissue strengthening properties, particularly when used in combination with horsetail extract.

ALCOHOL
Ethyl alcohol, is obtained by fermenting plant starch or sugar. Used as a solvent for extracts and a variety active ingredients. It has refreshing, astringent, and toning properties and also stimulates the circulation, and, therefore, used in facial toners.

ALGAE EXTRACT
Algae Extract, obtained from a variety of algae, protects against free radicals, moisturizing, protects the elastic tissue and influences the activity of the sebaceous glands.

ALGIN
Gel-forming alginic acid is obtained from a red algae. It forms the basis for soft, peel-off facial masks.

ALLANTOIN
Active ingredient found in comfrey root, viper's grass and horse chestnut. Has tissue regenerating and soothing properties.

ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF JUICE
Juice obtained from the inside of the leaves of Aloe Barbadensis Miller (Aloe Vera). Has moisturizing and calming properties. Especially useful in moisturizing products and sun protection products.

ALTHEA OFFICINALIS ROOT EXTRACT
Althea root extract (organic) has a high mucilage content. The extract is used for the care of easily irritated skin.

ALUMINUM/MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE STEARATE
This is a product of aluminum/magnesium hydroxide (used in the pharmaceutical industry as a remedy for heartburn), with stearic acid (from botanical oils), a substance which helps to improve the stability of W/O creams. Gives the skin a pleasant feeling.

ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE
Surface treated corn starch absorbs fat and moisture without swelling or forming clumps. Gives the skin a soft, velvety feel, ensures the even distribution of color pigments. Used in powder products.

AMINO ACIDS
Amino acids are the building components of protein. Can be found as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) in human skin. Ensures the maintenance of the slightly acid surface film and binds moisture.

AMYL CINNAMAL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in essential oils of chamomile and balsamic resins.

ANGELICA ARCHANGELICA ROOT EXTRACT
The toning effect of Angelica extract is due to its content of essential oil, bitter principle and tannins.

ANISE ALCOHOL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of vanilla and aniseed.

ANISIC ACID
PH-value stabilizing acid of anise.

AQUA
Water serves as a solvent for water soluble ingredients. In combination with moisture-binding substances it keeps the stratum corneum soft, smooth and supple. Borlind uses pure, non-chlorinated spring water from its own well.

ARACHIS HYPOGAEA (PEANUT) OIL
Peanut oil is extremely resistant against oxidation. Saturated peanut fat serves to give consistency to emulsions and is also an excellent skin care substance.

ARGININE
A natural amino acid with basic characteristics. Stabilizes the pH value of the product. Produced by fermentation.

AROMA (FRAGRANCE)
Aroma is the collective term for all fragrances. They are added to products in order to give them a pleasing scent. They are usually a mixture of natural essential oils and fragrances.

ARTEMIA EXTRACT
An extract obtained from the capsule of the plankton organism artemia salina. Contains the energy-rich substance diguanosin tetraphosphate, a molecule which is actively involved in the energy metabolism of the cell.

ASCORBYL DIPALMITATE
Oil soluble vitamin C stabilized by reaction with palmitic acid is transformed into free vitamin C in the skin where it counteracts damaging environmental influences and also firms connective tissue.

ASCOPHYLLUM NODOSUM
This extract of brown sea kelp contains anti seborrhoeic fucane and a significant amount of zinc. Regulates the sebaceous glands.

ASCORBIC ACID
Vitamin C can be found in a variety of fruits, particularly citrus fruit, rose hips and sea buckthorn. Strengthens the connective tissue.

ASCORBYL PALMITATE
Oil soluble vitamin C palmitate prevents oils and fats from becoming rancid.

ASPARAGINE

AVENA SATIVA (OAT) KERNEL FLOUR
We use oat kernel flour with its skin calming and soothing properties and oat oil with valuable unsaturated fatty acids and a high tocopherol content.

AVENA STRIGOSA SEED EXTRACT
Protein hydrolysate produced from black oats, intensively moisturizes the skin.

BAMBUSA ARUNDINACEA STEM EXTRACT
A silicic acid-rich dry extract of bamboo stem. The fine grains are perfect for body peeling.

BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE
Produced from behenyl alcohol, it is a quarternary ammonium compound. Positive electrical charge, it neutralizes the electrical charge of head hair, thus preventing ''fly away'' hair. Leaves the hair easy to comb.

BEHENYL ALCOHOL
Behenyl alcohol, produced from the oil of the behen tree. Is contained in small quantities in human skin fat. Gives pleasing characteristics and structure to emulsions.

BELLIS PERENNIS (DAISY)
Daisy extract is especially suitable for the care of greasy, blemished skin thanks to its content of alpha-hydroxy-acids, tannins and flavonoids.

BENZYL ALCOHOL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of jasmine, rose and lilac.

BENZYL BENZOATE
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of balm of peru and balm of tolu.

BENZYL CINNAMATE
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in essential balm oils.

BENZYL SALICYLATE
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of carnation and cloves.

BETAINE
Betain is a substance obtained from the sugar beet. It deposits itself on the keratin (structural protein) of the hair and skin where it reduces static and binds moisture.

BETULA ALBA LEAF EXTRACT
Birch extract, birch leaf extract stimulates the circulation and is astringent. Contains saponine, flavonoids and minerals. It is particularly useful for hair care products.

BIOTIN
Biotin belongs to the B vitamin group, it is important for the protein and fat metabolism of the cells. It stimulates hair growth and reduces hair loss. Biotin deficit leads to skin changes, hair loss and broken nails.

BISABOLOL
An isolated, anti-inflammatory ingredient obtained from the essential oil of chamomile or the blossoms of vanillosmopsis erythropappa. It calms the skin and counteracts redness.

BORAGO OFFICINALIS SEED OIL
Borrage seed oil contains, in addition to linolenic acid, about 20 Ð 25 percent gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an important fatty acid. It increases the elasticity of the skin and improves its moisture binding abilities.

BRASSICA CAMPESTRIS (RAPESEED) STEROL
Rape seed sterol is a mixture of sterols, which are similar in structure to cholesterol. It stabilizes emulsions, improves the barrier of the skin and gives shine to hair.

BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA BUTTER) FRUIT
Shea butter is a solid botanical fat obtained from the seeds of an African tree. Has remarkable skin-caring and nourishing properties. Counteracts dryness of skin and calms inflammation.

BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE
An oil soluble UV filter substance the only authorized UVA filter world wide that may be used without a warning notice. Used in sun sprays.

C

C12-13 ALKYL LACTATE
Fat-restoring substance from fatty alcohol and lactic acid. A skin care component used in shower gels.

C18-36 ACID TRIGLYCERIDE
A fat obtained from glycerin and solid botanical fatty acids. Gives firmness to stick products and emulsions.

CAFFEINE
Caffeine is a stimulating active ingredient obtained from the coffee bean. Used externally it leads to localized metabolic stimulation.

CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE
Calcium salt of pantothenic acid, belongs to the vitamin B group, increases the protein synthesis and also that of the keratin in the nails, thus promoting nail firmness.

CALCIUM SULFATE
Gypsum, a natural mineral used in facial masks. When combined with algin it forms a soft, but firm mass.

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS FLOWER EXTRACT
Calendula extract (organic) has calming, anti-inflammatory effects and also supports cell renewal.

CAMELIA OLEIFERA LEAF EXTRACT
Green tea, this extract is an excellent radical catcher and is especially suitable for the regeneration of mature skin.

CAMPHOR
Camphor is a strongly aromatic ingredient obtained from the wood of the tropical camphor tree. Stimulating and revitalizing.

CANANGA ODORATA FLOWER OIL
Ylang-ylang oil, obtained from the blossoms of the ylang-ylang tree. This fragrance, which originates from the India-Asian area, has a balsamic-sweet scent and a calming effect.

CAPRYL/CAPRAMIDO-PROPYL BETAINE
Produced from particular coconut fatty acids, the natural model for betaine can be found in the sugar beet.

CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE
An oil obtained from purified fatty acids of coconut oil. Long lasting with excellent skin-compatibility. Spreads easily on the skin without leaving a greasy shine.

CAPRYLOYL GLYCINE
Surfactant of caprylic acid, a component of the coconut- or palm nut oil and glycine, an amino acid. 100 percent bio-degradable.

CAPSELLA BURSA PASTORIS (SHEPHERDÕS PURSE)
Extract of shepherd's purse, has astringent and blood clotting properties.

CARBENIA BENEDICTA EXTRACT
Benedicta extract contains tannin and essential oils. Has a firming and toning effect on the skin.

CARBOMER
Polyacrylic acid derivative is used in the production of gels and to stabilize emulsions. The quantity used is less than 0.5 percent.

CARICA PAPAYA FRUIT EXTRACT
The extract of the tropical papaya fruit contains a protein splitting enzyme. Used in enzyme peelings, as the extract is able to remove loose corneocytes.

CARNITINE
Carnitine makes the biological breakdown of fatty acids possible. It occurs naturally in whey, yeast, liver and muscles, can also be bio-technically produced.

CARTHAMUS TINCTORIUS (SAFFLOWER) SEED OIL
Safflower Seed Oil, with a high linoleic acid content. This polyunsaturated fatty acid protects the skin from dryness.

CELLULOSE GUM
Water soluble cellulose (see cellulose).

CELLULOSE
The fibrous substance of all woody plants. Cellulose can absorb both moisture and fat, it forms an even film on the skin and is used, e.g., in powder eye shadow.

CENTAUREA CYANUS FLOWER EXTRACT
Cornflower extract has calming and strengthening properties. It keeps the skin smooth.

CENTELLA ASIATICA EXTRACT
Highly concentrated active ingredient obtained from tiger grass. Stimulates the renewal of collagen fibers.

CERA ALBA (BEESWAX)
Beeswax, purified wax obtained from the combs of honeybees. Is used mainly for its emulsion stabilizing characteristics. It gives structure to the products and is also used to give consistency to stick products.

CERAMIDE
Ceramides are important components of the stratum corneum lipids of the human skin. They prevent the dehydration of the skin through deposits in the barrier layer. Ceramides are bio-technically obtained from yeast, and are structurally identical to the ceramides found in the human skin.

CETEARYL ALCOHOL
Cetyl/Stearyl alcohol is a natural component of botanical waxes with skin caring properties.

CETEARYL GLUCOSIDE
Emulsifier from glucose and coconut fatty alcohol. Used in the production of skin-compatible O/W emulsions.

CETEARYL ISONONANOATE
A liquid wax with water repellant properties, found in the feather grease of water birds. Gives the skin a pleasant soft feeling and protects it against dehydration.

CETEARYL ETHYLHEXANOATE
Structure, incidence and characteristics similar to those of Cetearylisononanoate (see Cetearylisononanoate).

CETYL ALCOHOL
Cetyl alcohol is a pure fatty alcohol from botanical waxes.

CETYL PALMITATE
Wax ester from cetyl alcohol and palmitic acid. Main component of spermaceti, but is produced semi-synthetically from botanical oils, gives products a good consistency.

CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) DISTILLATE, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) EXTRACT, CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) FLOWER OIL
Chamomile (essential oil and extract) (organic) is a traditional medicinal plant with skin calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Especially used for the care of sensitive and delicate skin.

CHOLESTERYL HYDROXYSTEARATE
Emulsifier obtained from cholesterol (obtained from lanolin) and hydroxy stearic acid.

CHONDRUS CRISPUS (CARRAGEENAN)
Gel forming agent from red algae. Has skin smoothing and moisture retaining properties.

CI 15850 (RED 7 LAKE)
Red non soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted in all countries for the coloring of medicinal and cosmetic products.

CI 15985 (YELLOW 6 LAKE)
Yellow non-soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted in all countries for the coloring of medicinal, cosmetic products and food stuffs.

CI 16255 (ACID RED 18)
Red color, used only to color shower gels.

CI 19140 (YELLOW 5 LAKE)
Yellow non-soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted for food, medicinal and cosmetic products.

CI 45380 (RED 21)
Red non-soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted in all countries for the coloring of cosmetic and medicinal products.

CI 45410 (RED 28 LAKE)
Red non-soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted in all countries for the coloring of cosmetic and medicinal products.

CI 4005 (YELLOW 10)
Yellow non-soluble, organic-synthetic color pigment, permitted in all countries for the coloring of cosmetic and medicinal products.

CI 61585 (ACID BLUE 80)
Blue color, used only to color shower gels.

CI 73000 (INDIGO)
Obtained from the plant indigofera tinctoria, a natural blue color produced in India.

CI 75810 (CHLOROPHYLLIN-COPPER COMPLEX)
Water-soluble chlorophyll, used for coloring products because of its stable green color.

CI 77000 (ALUMINUM POWDER)
Aluminum powder used to give a metallic effect to pigments in the eye liner pencil and eyebrow pencil.

CI 77007 (ULTRAMARINES)
Ultramarine is a blue, mineral pigment. It is obtained from the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli and is mainly used as a blue pigment for eye shadows, but green, red, and violet ultramarine can also be found. These are also used in powders.

CI 77288 (CHROMIUM OXIDE GREENS)
Chromium Oxide Green is a mineral pigment. Completely light-fast with good coverage. Used in eye shadows.

CI 77289 (CHROMIUM HYDROXIDE GREEN)
Chromium hydroxide green is a very pale blue mineral pigment. Completely light-fast with a good coverage. Used in eye shadows.

CI 77489 (IRON OXIDES)
Iron oxides are natural mineral colors found in, e.g. sienna- or umbra soils. Available as a yellow, brown, red, or black pigment depending on the composition.

CI 77492 (IRON OXIDES)
Yellow iron oxide. see CI 77489.

CI 77499 (IRON OXIDES)

CI 77510 (FERRIC FERROCYANIDE)
A blue mineral pigment also known as Berlin blue.

CI 77742 (MANGANESE VIOLET)
A strong violet colored manganese phosphate, a mineral pigment. It is mainly used in powder eye shadows when violet to pink shades are required.

CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE)
Titanium Dioxide, a natural pigment found in the semi-precious stones rutil and anatas. Used for stable white tones and for shading.

CINNAMAL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in essential oil of cinnamon.

CINNAMYL ALCOHOL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in essential oil of cinnamon.

CITRAL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of lemon grass, orange, and lemon.

CITRIC ACID
Citric acid used to adjust the pH value and to improve the anti-oxidizing properties of a variety of substances. It belongs to the group AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) Ð or fruit acids. Depending on the pH value required potassium citrate or sodium citrate can also be used. (See potassium citrate/sodium citrate)

CITRONELLOL
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of eucalyptus, geranium and rose.

CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA (LIME) OIL
Lime, the essential oil belongs to the citrus oil family (refreshing).

CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (BITTER ORANGE) OIL
Obtained from the leaves and branches of the bitter orange tree, it is used to produce petitgrain oil. It has a spicy orange fragrance and gives the typical fragrance to Eau de Cologne.

CITRUS AURANTIUM BERGAMIA (BERGAMOT) FRUIT OIL
Bergamot, an essential oil which belongs to the citrus oil family (refreshing).

CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) FRUIT EXTRACT
A concentrated orange extract rich in vitamin C, citric acid, sugar and other vitamins. Revitalizes the skin and protects it against damage by free radicals. Helps the skin to retain its natural elasticity.

CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) OIL, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) FLOWER WATER
Orange, this essential oil belongs to the citrus oils, but is not as rich in citral, mainly contains limonen and has good deodorizing properties. The essential oil of orange blossom and its by-product, distilled water; come under the heading citrus dulcis. Orange blossom water is disinfecting and anti-inflammatory.

CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS MORO (ORANGE) FRUIT EXTRACT
A concentrate obtained from blood oranges from the slopes of Mount Etna. The red-colored ingredient protects the skin against environmentally caused stress. Vitamin C helps to improve the elasticity of the skin.

CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) JUICE POWDER, CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) PEEL OIL
Lemon, lemon juice contains astringent acids and enzymes which have a positive effect on greasy, blemished skin. The essential oil of lemon is the most important member of the citrus oil group and is both calming and refreshing.

COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX
Carnauba wax an extremely skin-compatible botanical wax obtained from the leaves of the Carnauba wax palm.Used to give consistency to products.

CORN STARCH MODIFIED
Modified corn starch binds moisture and gives cosmetic products a pleasant feeling on the skin.

COUMARIN
Aromatic substance with compulsory declaration. Occurs naturally in the essential oils of woodruff and sweet clover. 

CUCUMIS SATIVUS (CUCUMBER) FRUIT EXTRACT
Cucumber (organic) contains sugar and minerals. Moisturizes the skin, leaving it soft and delicate.

CYCLODEXTRIN
Produced from normal botanical starch using bacterial enzymes, ring shaped molecule formed by glucose. Fat and similar substances e.g. excessive sebum can be deposited within the ring.

CYMBOPOGON MARTINI OIL
The fragrance of the Palmarosa oil is slightly fruity, rose-like and flowery-sweet. Obtained by steam distillation from an East Indian grass species.

CYMBOPOGON SCHOENANTHUS OIL
Lemongrass. This essential oil belongs the Citrus oil group (refreshing), high Citral content.

DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA (CAROT) ROOT EXTRACT
Oily extract of carrot. High carotin (Provitamin A) content. Normalizes the stratum corneum production, giving it a fine structure. Yellow color for cosmetics.

DECYL COCOATE
An oily compound of coconut fatty acids and decyl alcohol Ð a fatty alcohol. Produced completely from ingredients obtained from coconut oil. Is quickly absorbed and mattes the skin.

DECYL OLEATE
Compound of botanical oleic acid and decyl alcohol. A fatty substance which is related to the biological skin fats. Non-irritating, skin-compatible, and skin caring.

DEXTRIN PALMITATE
Product of a reaction between starch and palmitic acid. Used to produce oily gels.

DIETHYLHEXYL SODIUM SULFOSUCCINATE
Mild surfactant, consists of Sulfosuccinic acid and Ethylhexyl alcohol.

DIHYDROXYACETONE 
Dihydroxyacetone is a trivalent sugar, a natural metabolite of the natural decomposition of glucose. Produced by fermenting glycerin. Reacts with the amino acids in the stratum corneum and thus colors them brown.

DISODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE
An active cleansing substance from coconut fatty acids and glutamic acid. Non-irritating and 100 percent bio-degradable.

DISODIUM GLYCYRRHETINATE
Sodium salt of glycrrhetinic acid, a calming active ingredient obtained from liquorice root.

DISTERADIMONIUM HECTORITE
A clay mineral. Used to stabilize emulsions.

ECHINACEA ANGUSTIFOLIA EXTRACT
Coneflower extract (organic); The Indians of North America used the coneflower as a medicinal plant. Effective against infections and promotes woundhealing. It supports the natural human immune system and the regeneration process. Accelerates the formation of granular tissue on wounds.

ECTOIN
Active ingredient found in a bacteria which survives under extreme conditions. Stabilizes important cell structures.

ELAEIS GUINEENSIS (PALM) KERNERL OIL
Palm kernel oil obtained from the kernel of the oil palm fruit is quickly absorbed by the skin, making it soft and smooth. The oil is very stable.

EQUISETUM ARVENSE EXTRACT
Horse tail extract (organic) is richest of all plants in silicic acid. The extract has astringent, stimulating and strengthening effects.

ESCULOSIDE
This active ingredient is extracted from the leaves and bark of the horse chestnut tree. It reduces the permeability of the capillaries and is effective against free radicals.

ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE
World-wide permitted UV-B filter substance based on methoxy cinnamic acid, which is found in many essential oils. Used as a UV protection substance. Absorbs UV-B rays which cause sunburn.

ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE
Palm fatty acid derivative, an oil component which is related to the feather gland oil of water birds. Spreads easily and is therefore often used in emulsions.

ETHYLHEXYL STEARATE
An oily substance from ethylhexyl alcohol (found in essential oils) and stearic acid (from botanical oils). A thin liquid which is quickly absorbed by the skin, it improves the spreadability of skin care products.

ETHYLPARABEN
Preservative from the parabene family. (See methyl parabene).

EUGENOL
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration, found in the essential oils of carnations and cloves.

EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX
Candelilla wax obtained from the leaves of a Central American lily. Used to give body and shine to lip sticks and touch-up sticks.

EUPHRASIA OFFICINALIS EXTRACT
Eyebright has astringent and calming characteristics. Readily used in case of conjunctivitis and slackness of the eyelids.

EVERNIA PRUNASTRI (OAK MOSS) EXTRACT
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration.

EVERNIA FURFURACEA (TREEMOSS) EXTRACT
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration.

F

FAEX (YEAST) EXTRACT
Yeast, is rich in amino acids, B-group vitamins and minerals. Good for the care of blemished skin.

FARNESOL
Occurs in the essential oils of roses, orange blossoms and wild cyclamen. Farnesol makes the skin smooth and soft without leaving a visible greasy layer on the skin. Anti-bacterial properties. Mild deodorant. Aroma substance with compulsory declaration.

FOENICULUM VULGARE (FENNEL) FRUIT EXTRACT
Fennel extract has a calming and slightly anti-bacterial effect. Used for the care of delicate, sensitive skin.

FOMES OFFICINALIS (MUSHROOM) EXTRACT
A matting, astringent and firming extract obtained from the white agaric (mushroom, found mainly in Russia).

FRUCTOSE
Fruit sugar occurring naturally in fruits and honey. Moisture-retaining. Smooths and softens the skin.

GALACTOARABINAN
A substance obtained from North American larches. Consists completely of sugars. Prevents skin dehydration and stabilizes emulsion products.

GALEOPSIS SEGETUM (HEMP-NETTLE)
Hemp nettle contains silicic acid and saponine. Used for blemished skin and for strengthening connective tissue.

GERANIOL
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration. Naturally occurs in the essential oils of rose, palm rose and lemon grass.

GINKGO BILOBA EXTRACT
The extract from the leaves of the ginkgo tree is rich in flavonoids, e.g. rutin. Stimulates the circulation of the skin, thus stimulating the metabolism. Ginkgo is an effective radical catcher, and therefore protects the hair and skin from premature ageing caused by environmental factors.

GLUCOSE
Glucose is the most frequently occurring sugar in nature. Moisture-retaining. Makes the skin smooth and soft. Used in the production of emulsifiers.

GLUTATHIONE
Glutathione is a substance present in the body's own metabolic system. Helps to prevent damage by oxidation. Protects the cell walls, improves the utilization of oxygen in living tissue and enhances cell metabolism. Obtained from yeast.

GLYCERIN
Glycerin is a component of fats and oils. Extremely hydrophilic. Used as a moisturizing agent. Borlind uses only glycerin obtained from botanical oils.

GLYCERYL LAURATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE
Compound of glycerin and fatty acids, skin-compatible fat components, gives products consistency.

GLYCERYL CAPRATE
Compound of natural glycerin and capronic acid. An emulsifier with moisture-binding properties.

GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE
Compound of natural glycerin and caprylic acid, surfactant, fat-restoring and moisture-binding substance with bacteriostatic effect.

GLYCERYL OLEATE
Glyceryl Oleate is a compound of glycerin and oleic acid. A component of skin fat, it keeps the skin soft and smooth.

GLYCERYL RICINOLEATE
Compound of natural glycerin and ricinoleic acid (from castor oil). An emulsifying and moisturizing ingredient.

GLYCERYL SORBITAN OLEOSTEARATE
A carefully produced emulsifier obtained from the natural botanical substances glyceryl, sorbitol, oleic acid and stearic acid.

GLYCERYL STEARATE CITRATE
A botanically based emulsifier, used to produce O/W emulsions.

GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) OIL
Soybean oil is a fatty botanical oil obtained from soy beans. It is rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids as well as lecithin and phytosterine. A good oil base for a number of cosmetic products.

Glycolic Acid is found in grapes, sugar beets and cane sugar, works as AHA-acids, has keratolytic properties, reduces the thicknes of the stratum corneum.

GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA (LIQUORICE) EXTRACT
Liquorice root extract has anti-inflammatory properties due to its main component glycyrrhizic acid.

GRAMINEAE (HAY FLOWER)
Hay flower oil and hay flower extract are obtained from the leaves and stalks of a variety of grasses. They promote the circulation, invigorate and stimulate the metabolism of the skin.

HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL) EXTRACT, HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL) DISTILLATE
Witch hazel is known for its high tannin content. The extract or the distillate is useful as an astringent toning and anti-inflammatory ingredient for cosmetic products.

HARPAGOPHYTUM PROCUMBENS ROOT EXTRACT
Devil's claw is a South African plant. The carbohydrates in this extract have a moisture-binding, skin-soothing effect and promote skin regeneration.

HEDERA HELIX (IVY) EXTRACT
Ivy leaf extract has astringent and skin regenerating properties.

HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL
Sunflower oil is rich in essential fatty acids. Necessary to keep the skin soft and smooth.

HELICHRYSUM ARENARIUM (YELLOW CHASTEWEED)
Yellow Chasteweed contains bacteriostatic active agents, suitable for the care of blemished skin.

A fatty oil obtained from the fruits of the sea buckthorn bush, an oily, orange-red liquid which contains important unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, beta-carotin, and carotinoides. Used to protect and heal damaged skin.

HUMULUS LUPULUS (HOPS) EXTRACT
Hops (organic), an acknowledged and reliable calming ingredient. The calming substances can be absorbed by the skin from both the extract and the essential oil. In addition, hop extract has relaxing, moisturizing and strengthening properties.

HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL
Saturated castor oil, serves to give consistency to products.

HYDROGENATED COCO-GLYCERIDES
Saturated, partially hydrolized coconut oil. Binds moisture on the skin. Gives products consistency.

HYDROGENATED LECITHIN
Highly purified, saturated lecithin, produced from soy lecithin. Stabilizes emulsions and forms gel like strata in water. Used as the only stabilizer in the production of high quality skin care products. The pre-formed lecithin layers combine with the skin's stratum corneum lipids, which smoothes and cares for the surface of the skin.

HYDROGENATED PALM GLYCERIDE
Modified palm kernel fat, a consistency-giver with light emulsifying properties.

HYDROGENATED PALM GLYCERIDES CITRATE
A foodstuff emulsifier, produced from botanical fats and citric acid. Suitable for stabilizing O/W emulsions. Stabilizes the pH-value of the skin, also has moisture-retaining properties.

HYDROGENATED PALM KERNEL GLYCERIDES
Saturated, partially hydrolized palm kernel fat. Binds moisture on the skin. Used as a smooth fat for stick products.

HYDROLYZED ADANSONIA DIGITATA EXTRACT
A high molecular extract from the African baobab tree. Moisturizes, supports the skin barrier and firms the skin.

HYDROLYZED VEGETABLE PROTEIN
Protein obtained from carrots, moisturizes and firms the skin.

HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN
Obtained by the enzymatic degradation of wheat germ protein (gluten). Binds moisture on the skin. Firms the structure of the hair giving is shine and leaving it easy to comb.

HYDROXYPROPYL TRIMONIUM HONEY
Damaged hair (e.g. environmental damage, bleaching or perming) is always electrically negatively charged. This charge can be neutralized by positively charged hair care products; this is the case with quaternary honey. This prevents the hair from becoming statically charged, thus leaving it easy to style.

HYPERICUM PERFORATUM
St. John's wort extract (organic). Has an astringent and skin-regenerating effect. St. John's wort oil particularly has skin stimulating and firming effects.

ISOAMYL P-METHOXYCINNAMATE
A compound of Methoxycinnamate which is found in several essential oils and can be used as UV protection. Absorbs the UV-B rays which cause sunburn.

Aroma substance with compulsory declaration, naturally found in essential oil of ylang ylang.

ISOPROPYL PALMITATE
Compound of palmtic acid and isopropyl alcohol. Palmitic acid can mainly be found in palm oil but also in many other botanical oils and fats. Skin-caring.

JUGLANS REGIA (WALNUT) SHELL EXTRACT
Walnut extract, walnut oil. Walnut extract is obtained from the external shell, which contains juglone. This substance gives a brown color to the skin and is slightly antibacterial.

JUNIPERUS COMMUNIS FRUIT OIL
Juniper fruit oil has a stimulating fragrance, which reminds one of conifers, is obtained by steam distillation from the ripe, dried fruits of the Juniper.

KAOLIN
Kaolin is a natural clay frequently found in nature, but can seldom be obtained in its pure form. Finely ground it forms a base for powders and a transparent white pigment. It swells in water to form a basis for clay masks.

L

LACTIC ACID
Lactic acid is present in the natural moisturizing factors of the stratum corneum of the skin. Obtained by fermentation. Has moisture-binding effects and stabilizes the pH value of the skin. Found in fruits, it belongs to the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAÕs). Often found in neutralized form, e.g. as sodium salt (see sodium lactate).

LACTIS PROTEINUM (MILK PROTEIN)
Hydrolyzed milk protein (milk protein split into small components down to amino acids) have a caring effect on the skin.

LACTIS PROTEINUM (WHEY PROTEIN)
An active milk protein consists of so-called messenger substances. Activates the metabolism of the epidermis and ensures optimal skin functioning.

LAMINARIA CLOUSTONI EXTRACT
Algae extract (seaweed extract) which improves the information exchange of the epidermis.

LAMINARIA DIGITATA EXTRACT
Algae extract (seaweed extract) with skin-firming properties.

LAURYL GLUCOSID
Sugar based surfactant. Produced from renewable raw ingredients (sugar), completely bio-degradable. Used in mild bath products and shampoos.

LAURYL LACTATE
Ester of lauryl alcohol with lactic acid. Keeps the skin smooth and stabilizes its natural pH value.

LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) OIL
The typical fragrance of lavender oil is characteristic of the South of France. Used as a calming ingredient.

LAWSONIA INERMIS (HENNA) EXTRACT
A neutral, non-coloring extract from the henna plant (organic). Gives shine, body and firmness to the hair.

LECITHIN
Substances similar to fat, they have emulsifying properties. They stimulate the resorption, absorption and penetration; they soften the hair and counteract greasiness. Lecithin can be found in most botanical oils and are therefore used in a variety of products. Liposomes and nanoparticles are produced from special lecithin; they are excellent, tiny transport substances for water- and oil soluble active ingredients.

A pH-value stabilizing acid of fruit sugar.

LIMNANTHES ALBA (MEADOWFOAM) SEED OIL
A very stable oil obtained from the seeds. The high concentration of long chain fatty acids ensures a particularly good skin feeling.

LIMONENE
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration. Found naturally in the essential oils of lemon.

LINALOOL
Aroma substance with compulsory declaration. Found naturally in the essential oils of coriander, cinnamon and orange blossoms.

LINARIA VULGARIS (WILD FLAX)
Wild flax has contracting properties.

LINUM USITATISSIMUM (LINSEED)
Linseed is rich in mucilage and, therefore, soothing.

LOESS (HEALING EARTH)
Healing earth, absorbs impurities, particularly suitable for greasy, blemished skin. Used for the treatment of burns, eczema, inflammation and furuncles. Has toning effect and also provides coverage for make-up.

LYSOZYME
An enzyme found in tears or the white of chicken eggs. Attacks the cell walls of many micro-organisms, thus acts as an effective bactericide.

MACADAMIA TERNIFOLIA SEED OIL
Macadamia nut oil. Oil obtained from the nuts of a tree found in the pacific area. Very similar to the sebum of the human skin. Excellent lubricating and emollient properties.

MAGNESIUM ALUMINUM SILICATE
A natural clay used as an emulsion-stabilizing thickening agent in O/W creams.

MAGNESIUM ASCORBYL PHOSPHATE
Magnesium Ascorbic Phosphate is Vitamin C in a stable Form, i.e. it retains almost the same degree of efficacy after many years of shelf life. Effective against free radicals, keeps the skin in good condition.

MAGNESIUM ASPARTATE
Magnesium salt of aspartic acid. See amino acids.

MAGNESIUM STEARATE
Compound of stearic acid and magnesium. Stabilizes the structure and consistency of emulsions.

MAGNESIUM SULFATE
Magnesium sulfate, known as bitter salt. A component of mineral water. Used in cosmetics to stabilize emulsions.

MALIC ACID
Malic acid is a fruit acid found in apples, grapes, quinces, gooseberries and rowan berries and obtained from apples. It belongs to the so-called AHA-acids. When used on the skin it removes the upper layer of corneocytes of skin which stimulates its regeneration. The skin becomes smoother and fresher.

MALVA SYLVESTRIS (MALLOW) EXTRACT
Mallow extract (organic) contains mucilage and tannins. Has a skin-smoothing, moisturizing and protecting effect.

MARRUBIUM VULGARE (HOREHOUND)
Horehound contains tannins; it reduces irritation and redness.

MEL (HONEY)
Honey has healing, antiseptic and moisturizing qualities. It consists mainly of fruit sugar and glucose.

MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA (TEA TREE) LEAF EXTRACT
Tea tree oil is a valuable essential oil from the Australian tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Is mildly disinfecting, useful for blemished skin, pimples and other skin problems.

MELILOTUS OFFICINALIS (MELILOT)
The extract stimulates the circulation and has anti-inflammatory properties, used mainly because of its coumarin and allantoin content.

MELISSA OFFICINALIS (BALM MINT) LEAF EXTRACT, MELISSA OFFICINALIS (BALM MINT) DISTILLATE
Balm Mint (organic), because of its essential oil content, which can also be found in citrus oils, balm mint extract has a calming effect on the skin and on the whole body after being absorbed by the skin. Balm mint baths are relaxing and help to soothe neuralgic pains and nervosity. Balm mint is slightly astringent on the skin and is therefore especially suitable for greasy, blemished skin. Used as both an extract and essential oil.

MENTHOL
Main component of the essential oil obtained from peppermint. Used mainly in body care products because of its cooling properties. Noticeable aroma of mint.

MENTHYL LACTATE
Menthyl lactate is produced from the natural ingredients menthol and lactic acid. Menthol has a cooling effect on the skin. The lactic acid strengthens the skin's own acid mantel.

METHYL GLUCOSE DIOLEATE
Methyl glucose dioleate is composed of the natural substances glucose and oleic acid. An emulsifier carefully produced from botanical ingredients.

METHYL GLUCOSE SESQUISTEARATE
Methyl glucose sesquistearate is composed of the natural substances glucose and stearic acid. Acts as an Emulsifier.

METHYLPARABEN
A preservative from the parabene family. Nature-identical, the most commonly used preservative. A synergistic effect can be achieved by combination with other parabenes (e.g. methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-) i.e. the total dose can be reduced whilst maintaining a good level of preservation.

MICA
Mica is a natural mineral which can be split into small glimmering sheets because of its layered structure. Used alone it gives a light glitter to powder and makeup products. When coated with titanium dioxide it produces pearlescent pigment.

MICA/TITANIUM DIOXIDE
Pearlescent pigment consisting of titanium dioxide and mica.

MYRTUS COMMUNIS OIL
Myrtle oil is obtained from the blossoms, leaves and twigs of the bride myrtle. The fragrance mixes well with lavender.

Rest harrow. The extract has antiseptic properties, good for eczema and poorly healing wounds.

ORYZANOL
Gamma-Oryzanol is a component of rice oil. It has anti-oxidation properties and offers the skin some protection from UV-A and UV-B rays.

ORYZA SATIVA (RICE) STARCH, ORYZA SATIVA (RICE) BRAN OIL
Rice starch absorbs dirt and sebum and also has a slight peeling effect. Rice oil is obtained from rice bran. Contains the natural UV filter oryzanol.
